Automatic Tire Chains -- What A Great Idea!
Are automatic tire chains a new and innovative idea? No, not really. The basic idea has been around for over 95 years. And have been in use since 1978. As a matter of fact, statistics show that more than 100,000 have been installed on different types of vehicles. What started out as an anti skid apparatus, has research showing that the biggest users of these remarkable tire chains are volunteer fire departments. They permanently attach to the rear undercarriage of the vehicle. It has to have some type of air pressure so that the chain-wheels can come down and make contact with the sidewall.
It is the friction that causes the chain-wheels to rotate. The force of the rotation causes the chains to whip out and pass between the tire and road surface for traction in the rough weather. When not in use they stay in their raised resting position. One of the great things about automatic tire chains is that you don't have to stop the vehicle. The switch is turned on and the chains come down and immediately start working. Immediately start giving you traction, so you can continue driving, no matter how deep the snow, or how much ice is on the ground.
The automatic tire chains are never put into use on regular pavement or ground. But during harsh weather, can be a time saver. Be careful if there are road changes from snow and ice to a regular road. Switch on, to have the chains and switch off, to have them back in place. It definitely can help keep you on your schedule. It will be great if you don't have to be stopping and putting on, and then stopping and putting off.
These chains, from the beginning, were made for larger vehicles with compressed air as the source to operate them. There will need to be some measuring, to be sure that the system will fit on the vehicle that will be using them. One size does not fit every frame. For the money you will be spending, it will not do any harm to take the time to get the measurements right.
